Question: if there really are "Decent Republicans" out there, where exactly have they been all these years? The McCain-Rove campaign plan is nothing but warmed-over leftovers from Nixon's Southern Strategy, which was really just a racial reworking of the 1950's "red scares." This may be disgusting and rotten to the core, but nothing that has happened is a surprise. The Republican Right has been feeding and exploiting racism and paranoia for most of my life.
So where were these decent Republicans then? Have they never heard of Rush Limbaugh? Newt Gingrich? Tom Delay? Jerry Falwell? Did they just notice Karl Rove now? And where were they when Bush and Cheney were tagging all dissent as treason?
I'm all for reforming a Republican Party that is rotten to the core, but this has been a long time coming. Fear and loathing is in the party's DNA. If the honest Republicans are sincere, they will have to clean their group out completely. The paint will have to be stripped from the walls and the entire house rebuilt. I don't expect this to happen anytime soon. This is most likely a long-term goal, only to be realized after the Movement Conservatism Generation passes.
Needless to say, the crazies are completely in charge, and nothing is going to shake them loose. The GOP is the party of Jesus Camp now. The Reagan Revolution has collapsed into madness.
