This Republican Party has been playing this scam ever since the rise of Jerry Falwell in the 1970's. Why do you think the stupids are so easily whipped into a frenzy? Don't pretend to be surprised at this.
Heck, the rapture story and the success of the Left Behind series should have tipped you off. In this "rapture" story, Jesus comes down from Heaven with a mighty army, and then slaughters all the Jews, all the Catholics, all the Muslims, etc. in the world. The true believers, the Christian Right Fundamentalists (cue to favorite televangelist), will be transported off the earth - "raptured." That way there are no innocent victims.
