As George Orwell warned us in 1984, "a hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance." It is one of the cornerstones of all authoritarian movements. And this is why the hard-right idealogues who control the GOP are so relentless in destroying public education in this nation.
Don't allow anyone to fool you; statements like these are no mere gaffs:
"I would certainly favor doing away with the Department of Energy and I think that given the origins of the Department of Education," the Senator said on CNN's Late Edition in December 1994. "I would favor doing away with it as well."
Hand the keys of the White House to John McCain, I dare you.
